DASS Statement on the SAVE Act Introduction

Mar 31, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

03/31/25

WASHINGTON – In response to the GOP introduction of the SAVE Act in the House Committee on House Administration, Democratic Association of Secretaries of State interim Executive Director Drew Godinich issued the following statement:

“For months, election officials have spoken out about the dangers of the SAVE Act: a bill designed to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters and overwhelm election administrators. Married women, disabled people, transgender individuals, and rural voters would all face major obstacles to casting their ballots. Sixty million rural voters alone would be forced to drive hundreds of miles to reach an election office and register in-person, per the bill’s requirements.

“Nearly half of Americans do not have easy access to their passport, birth certificate, or naturalization papers – meaning otherwise eligible voters could be effectively shut out of the democratic process. Even those with the required documentation would be at risk if they’ve recently moved and haven’t yet updated their records.

“The SAVE Act is a blatant GOP power grab. The communities most likely to be disenfranchised – women, LGBTQ+ people, and disabled voters – are traditionally Democratic-leaning. This bill isn’t about election integrity – it’s about silencing voices and rigging the system in their favor.

“That’s why Democratic Secretaries of State are fighting back: to ensure every eligible American has the opportunity to have their voice heard.”
