WASHINGTON D.C. — After Sarah Copeland Hanzas secured the Democratic nomination for Vermont Secretary of State, Semedrian Smith, deputy executive director of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (DASS), issued the following statement:

“The job of Secretary of State is to ensure that every eligible Vermonter has access to the ballot box, and that our elections are conducted fairly. The position requires someone who is honest and has integrity. Only one candidate can deliver on this promise to serve – and that candidate is Sarah Copeland Hanzas. As a state representative, Sarah led the charge to enact universal vote-by-mail for general elections. She’s a fierce advocate for our climate, paid sick leave, LGBTQ+ equality, and abortion rights – and she will chart a path forward that strengthens democracy in Vermont.

“At a time when Donald Trump and his allies are trying to throw out the vote and overturn our elections, she knows precisely what is at stake – our very democracy. She takes that responsibility seriously and will protect our voting rights.
