Democratic Association of Secretaries of State Response to Trump’s Latest Repeated Lies Regarding the 2020 Election
WASHINGTON – Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (DASS) Chair Cisco Aguilar released the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s speech that air discredited conspiracy theories about the 2020 election:
“That was some bullshit.”
Background:
ABC News: “Trump has a long history of crying foul in contests he doesn’t win” … in 2016, Trump claimed Sen. Ted Cruz committed fraud during the Iowa Caucus. “Trump has a long history of crying foul in contests he doesn’t win, including previously saying that the ‘Emmys are all politics’ after his reality TV show, ‘The Apprentice,’ never won an award. He also labeled then-President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection ‘a total sham.’ He leaned on that same tactic in 2016 during the GOP primaries, including the Iowa and Colorado caucuses, which he lost to Cruz. ‘Based on the fraud committed by Senator Ted Cruz during the Iowa Caucus, either a new election should take place or Cruz results nullified,’ Trump tweeted that year without providing evidence.” [ABC News, 9/8/22]
Associated Press: Trump’s own administration said the 2020 election was the most secure ever. “Trump himself continues to rail against the election in tweets and in interviews though his own administration has said the 2020 election was the most secure ever. He recently allowed his administration to begin the transition over to Biden, but he still refuses to admit he lost. The issues they’ve have pointed to are typical in every election: Problems with signatures, secrecy envelopes and postal marks on mail-in ballots, as well as the potential for a small number of ballots miscast or lost.” [Associated Press, 12/1/20]
Attorney General William Barr said there was no evidence that widespread fraud impacted the 2020 election. “Attorney General William Barr said Tuesday that there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, defying President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to reverse the results. ‘To date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election,’ Barr said in an interview with The Associated Press. Barr’s comments are some of the sharpest rejections yet from a Cabinet member of Trump’s false and baseless claims of a ‘rigged’ election. ‘There’s a growing tendency to use the criminal justice system as sort of a default fix-all, and people don’t like something they want the Department of Justice to come in and ‘investigate,’’ Barr said. […] Barr, who has been one of Trump’s strongest allies in Washington, had repeated many of Trump’s unfounded claims that mail-in voting during the coronavirus pandemic was especially vulnerable to fraud.” [NBC News, 12/1/20
