DASS Statement on Oregon Victory Over Trump’s DOJ to Protect Voter’s Privacy

WASHINGTON – Political Director of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State Chelsey Wininger issued the following statement on Friday, January 16, after Judge Mustafa Kasubhai’s oral ruling that the U.S. Department of Justice cannot force Oregon to hand over personally identifiable voter data:

“As the President of the United States uses his power to attack our democracy, threaten elections, and subvert states’ constitutional authority, court rulings like this make it clear: state and local officials administer elections. Full stop.

The Trump administration’s federal overreach is not normal. It is illegal, it is wrong, and it is doomed to fail. We are confident that other courts will push back against the DOJ’s overreach, and we congratulate Secretaries Read and Weber on their success in protecting voters and their sensitive data. These wins represent the importance of having pro-democracy Secretaries of State running elections, and we are immensely proud to support Democratic Secretaries as they continue to protect the rights and information of all voters.”
