NC GOP Court of Appeals Paves the Way to Overturn Democratic Election Victory, Disenfranchising Over 65,000 Voters

WASHINGTON – Today, the GOP majority on North Carolina’s Court of Appeals paved the way for a Republican Judge to overturn his defeat by a Democratic opponent in November, ruling that Judge Jefferson Griffin’s effort to throw out 65,000 voters’ ballots from the 2024 North Carolina Supreme Court election is valid. The ruling follows the high-profile Democratic victory in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court race that demonstrated clear voter interest in protecting democracy from partisan extremists.

DASS Interim Executive Director Andrew Godinich released the following statement in response:

“This is a shameless, partisan move by Republican judges to hand their GOP ally the power to overturn the will of the people – and the American people won’t stand for it. Just this week, we saw democracy in action when voters delivered a major win for Democrats in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court race. The Republican playbook couldn’t be more clear: if you can’t win an election, simply throw out the results – democracy, but only when it’s convenient.

“The cycle is just getting started, but voters are already rising up to defend free and fair elections – and so is DASS. We’re harnessing grassroots energy to protect our democracy, hold Republicans accountable, and win big next year.”
