WASHINGTON – Yesterday, North Carolina’s GOP State Auditor broke with a century of North Carolina law and tradition and spearheaded a takeover of the North Carolina State Board of Elections, creating a Republican majority on the board.

Statement from DASS Interim Executive Director Andrew Godinich on North Carolina Republicans’ power grab to control North Carolina’s elections:

“Republican lawmakers in North Carolina didn’t like the outcome of the last election — so instead of earning back voters’ trust and support, they changed the rules and stacked the deck in their favor. Let’s call this what it is: a blatant power grab. Voters elected a Democratic Governor and Secretary of State last cycle, and in response, Republicans rewrote the law to strip that office of its authority and hand control of elections to partisan operatives. It’s an attempt to rig the system in their favor, plain and simple.

“At DASS, we believe voters — not politicians — should decide elections. This is part of a dangerous national trend: when democracy delivers results Republicans don’t like, they try to undermine it. We will continue fighting these attacks and standing up for free, fair, and nonpartisan elections across the country.”
