Democratic Secretaries of State on Trump’s Threat to Withhold State Funding and Vote By Mail Ballot Disinformation

Today, Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (DASS) Chair and California Secretary of State Alex Padilla issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s tweets threatening to withhold state funding and spreading disinformation about mail in ballots.

“Trump has gone Ukraine on Michigan and Nevada, threatening to cut off funding for their audacity to not make voters choose between protecting their health and exercising their right to vote. We will not allow our democracy to become a casualty of this pandemic. Our right to vote is sacred and vote by mail is a secure, proven practice in red, blue, and purple states.

“Tragically, Trump has failed to protect Americans and our nation’s economy from COVID-19. It is unconscionable, but not surprising, that he now seeks to distract from his pandemic response by once again attacking our right to vote, spreading disinformation about mail in ballots, and undermining confidence in our free and fair elections.

“Ironically, whenever election modernization is proposed in federal legislation, Republican leaders instantly argue that the federal government should not dictate how states run elections. Will they have the backbone to denounce this latest Trump threat?”
