DASS Statement on Trump’s DOJ Building a National Voter Roll to Push Conspiracies
WASHINGTON – Executive Director of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State Ariel Hayes issued the following statement after the Trump DOJ requested detailed voter roll data from over 30 states – the largest set of national voter roll data it has ever collected:
“Under no circumstances would Donald Trump’s Department of Justice collect massive amounts of voter roll data for legitimate purposes. Trump and his allies are clearly planning to exploit sensitive voter information to push false narratives and spread disinformation – ranging from baseless claims of voter fraud to attempts to undermine future elections – despite multiple bi-partisan investigations debunking their conspiracies.
“No president or Department of Justice has ever attempted anything like this in our nation’s history. Worse, Trump’s DOJ hasn’t even offered a reasonable legal argument for why sharing this data is even permissible by law. The shady, undisclosed purpose of these requests remains unclear, raising serious legal and constitutional concerns.
“As always, Democratic Secretaries of State across the country will continue to follow the law – and protect voters from unconstitutional overreach and misuse of personal information. The American people deserve elections that are free, fair, safe, secure, and protective of their personal data.”
