WASHINGTON D.C. — Following the election results in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Vermont, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, chair of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of Secretaries of State, issued the following statement:

“Americans across the country reaffirmed this nation’s commitment to democracy and fundamental freedom. Given the choice between democracy and extremism, voters chose democracy by electing Secretaries of State who will protect this nation’s free, fair, and secure elections. Extremism and election denialism must be defeated.

“I would like to congratulate Dr. Shirley Weber, Stephanie Thomas, Alexi Giannoulias, Bill Galvin, Jocelyn Benson, Steve Simon, Maggie Toulouse Oliver, Gregg Amore, and Sarah Copeland Hanzas for showing such tireless passion and determination. Congratulations to the campaign staff and the volunteers whose work made this victory possible. I would like to thank our partners who helped the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State build an unprecedented campaign to bring a little-known office into the national spotlight and show the vital role it plays in protecting our fundamental freedoms. And, most importantly, I would like to thank the voters.

“If the last few years have taught us anything, it is that democracy is a decision. It doesn’t happen automatically. It only happens when a majority of people want it to happen. While we still await results in Arizona and Nevada, it is clear that last night voters in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, and Vermont have made their decision, and they decided that people who don’t believe in the will of the voters shouldn’t oversee elections.

“I am also confident that, when all the votes are counted, voters will choose Adrian Fontes and Cisco Aguilar: public servants who will protect Arizona’s and Nevada’s free, fair, and secure elections..”
