WASHINGTON D.C. – After securing the support of more than 100 elected officials throughout Georgia and receiving over twice as many votes as any other candidate, voting rights advocate and State Representative Bee Nguyen took a commanding lead in the Democratic primary election for Georgia Secretary of State. With more than 44% of the vote, Bee heads into a runoff where she is poised to secure the Democratic nomination. Kim Rogers, Executive Director of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (DASS), issued the following statement:

“Georgia voters sent a clear signal: they want Bee Nguyen to lead the fight for fair, secure, and free elections — free from Brad Raffensperger’s voter suppression. Georgians deserve a Secretary of State who will fight for all eligible voters’ right to make their voices heard and choose the leaders who will make decisions about their fundamental freedoms.

“Our freedom to live free from the tragedy of violent mass shootings, attacks on our right to choose, and attempts to roll back our ability to love freely goes through the ballot box. Bee will be a Secretary of State who ensures all eligible Georgians will have access to that ballot box.

“That is not what Brad Raffensperger stands for after years of undermining voting rights in Georgia while in office. Since 2020, he has tried to make it harder to vote – attacking no-excuse absentee voting, which 1.3 million Georgians used in November, and defended SB 202, an extreme law that would allow politicians to override county boards while rolling back access to the ballot.

“Georgians can choose between a Secretary of State who wants to play politics and pick and choose who gets to vote, or someone like Bee who will fight for every Georgian voter to have their voice heard.”
