WASHINGTON D.C. — After incumbent California Secretary of State Shirley Weber won yesterday’s Democratic primary, Kim Rogers, executive director of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (DASS), issued the following statement:

“Last night, Californians overwhelmingly supported Secretary Dr. Shirley Weber’s historic re-election bid for Secretary of State, and for good reason. As California’s first Black Secretary of State and a daughter of the Jim Crow South, Dr. Weber has founded her career on fighting for voting rights and election reforms that create more accessible and equitable pathways to the ballot box. Her work in the Secretary of State’s office oversaw a gubernatorial recall with high voter turnout, and showcased her ability to innovate the office, serve all voters, and facilitate California’s elections.

“Democracy is on the ballot this year. Candidates like Rob Bernosky want to roll back access to the ballot box, and they will only make the Secretary of State’s office more partisan and polarizing. Now more than ever, we need people like Secretary Weber to strengthen and safeguard our democracy.”
