WASHINGTON D.C. — After Kristina Karamo secured the Republican nomination for Michigan Secretary of State, Semedrian Smith, deputy executive director of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (DASS), issued the following statement:
“Kristina Karamo is genuinely dangerous. After years of being a fringe advocate for wild conspiracy theories, she rose to fame on the back of Donald Trump’s Big Lie in the hopes of obtaining power for extreme causes. Despite the fact that she is running to be Michigan’s Secretary of State, Karamo dislikes the concept of free and fair elections. She seeks to pick and choose our elected officials – regardless of who the voters want – so long as it’s in service of leaders who will do and say the things she agrees with.
“As if that weren’t enough, Karamo has gone out of her way to champion an assault on Michiganders’ fundamental freedoms. She believes that abortions are a ‘satanic practice’ and ‘child sacrifice,’ she says premarital sex leads to the ‘normalization’ of pedophila, and calls public schools ‘indoctrination camps.’ Everything about Karamo’s candidacy represents a menacing regression that would leave Michiganders far worse off than they are today. That’s not democracy, and that’s not American.
“Secretary Benson represents a better choice. She started her career defending voting rights with the NAACP and Southern Poverty Law Center, and has fought for Michiganders every day as Secretary of State. In just four years, she has modernized Michigan’s branch offices, reduced long wait times, protected the state’s elections and expanded voting rights, enabling record-breaking voter turnout. On top of her great work in the state, she knows a thing or two about Secretaries of State, since she quite literally wrote the book on them.”
