DASS Statement on Trump’s Lies about Vote Counting
Today, Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (DASS) Chair and California Secretary of State Alex Padilla issued the following statement on President Trump’s call to stop the vote counting process and his premature declaration of victory.
“It should go without saying that our fundamental right to vote includes our right to have that vote counted. President Trump’s calls to halt the processing and counting of ballots, while millions of ballots remain to be tallied, are simply his latest assault on our free and fair elections. He has no authority to stop votes from being counted.”
“All ballots that were lawfully cast must be counted, whether they were cast on Election Day, during the in-person early voting period, or were mailed in and arrived within the permitted timeframes. State and local elections officials have a sworn duty to protect voting rights and the integrity of our elections and that includes ensuring that ballot processing, vote counting, and post-election audits are complete before official results are certified.”
