Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold issued the below statement on behalf of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (DASS) in response to today’s SCOTUS ruling in voting rights case Brnovich v. DNC:
“This decision is the latest blow in a nationwide voting rights crisis that primarily affects voters of color. Not only will this decision allow voter suppression measures in Arizona to stand, it also opens the door to weakening protections against future racially discriminatory voting policies nationwide.
“Today’s ruling shows we can’t solely rely on the courts to protect the right to vote. We need Congress to pass bold reforms to rebuild and strengthen our democracy through the For the People Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. And in 2022, voters can use their ballot to elect Secretaries of State who believe in voting rights and will ensure all eligible voters, no matter where they live or what they believe in, can make their voices heard.”
