Statement from Colorado Secretary of State and DASS Chair Jena Griswold on the Senate’s upcoming markup of the For the People Act of 2021

May 11, 2021

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold issued the below statement on behalf of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (DASS) in response to the Senate’s upcoming markup of the For the People Act of 2021:

“As Democratic Secretaries of State, we see the Senate’s markup of S.1, or the For the People Act, as an exciting next step toward making this transformational bill the law of the land. While the 2020 elections were the most secure in American history, they showed that we cannot take our democracy for granted. The policies that gave voters better options to safely register to vote and cast a ballot in the face of the pandemic were a resounding success and must now be made permanent.

“Each day, Democratic Secretaries of State use every tool available to combat attacks on the right to vote in their own states, but we are seeing a coordinated effort to restrict voting rights, especially those of communities of color. As anti-voting bills become law with every passing day, this nationwide crisis for our democracy must be met with voter protection reforms at the federal level. Secretaries of State urge the Senate to step up and protect the right to vote for every American.”
