WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s announced charges against former President Donald Trump regarding his involvement in the January 6 insurrection, Travis Brimm – Executive Director of Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (DASS) – issued the following statement:

“Today’s charges for former President Trump’s leading role in the insurrection are an important step towards justice for the American people. January 6 was a dark day for our democracy, where Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election led to deadly consequences. In its wake, Trump and his enablers extended safe harbor to extremists who attacked our Capitol, killed police officers, and fostered a climate of violent threats against elected officials whom they disagreed with.”

“Anti-democratic and anti-American extremists continue to pose an existential threat to the nation – rolling back voting rights, spreading lies about past elections, and using threats of political violence in an attempt to rig future elections. Democratic Secretaries of State understand the challenges that lie ahead, and remain committed to ensuring free and fair elections for all Americans.”
